St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – (September 15, 2022) – Fordham's
Kristen Cocozza netted the lone goal of the contest, while
Serena Mensah made six saves in net, as the Rams opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 1-0 women's soccer victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at the Marra Athletic Complex.
The Rams (2-6-0, 1-0 A-10) dominated possession of the ball for most of the game, finishing the match with a 31-12 shot advantage of the Bonnies, who took their first loss of the season (2-1-5, 0-1 A-10).
That possession led to the only goal of the contest in the 58
th minute, as
Kristen Cocozza gained possession in the offensive side of the field. She went on a run to the top of the box, fending off a St. Bonaventure defender. Cocozza was able to connect on a shot from 20 yards that snuck past St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger inside the right post for her first goal of the season.
Fordham continued to pressure the Bonnies, as Gottinger made four of her nine saves over the final 30 minutes to keep the score at 1-0.
That effort though was not enough, as Fordham's keeper
Serena Mensah had two of her six saves over that same amount of time to record her first shutout of the season and her third career shutout.
With the win, the Rams improved to 18-6-2 all-time against St. Bonaventure, and earned their first conference-opening win since 2019.
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, September 18
th, when the team hosts George Washington for a 1:00 PM start at Jack Coffey Field.
