Richmond, Va. – (May 19, 2022) – VCU's Tyler Locklear drove in a game-high six runs, as he led his team to a 17-1 win over the Fordham Rams at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia to open a three-game Atlantic 10 series on Thursday.
Fordham (16-34, 9-13 A10) opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the first, as the team had runners at first and third with two outs.
Andy Semo took out for second and got in a rundown and was tagged out, but not before
Zach Selinger crossed the plate for the opening run of the ball game.
The lead did not last long, as VCU (34-18, 17-5 A10) scored three in the bottom of the frame on a bases loaded double by Will Carlone for a 3-1 lead.
VCU went on to score once in the second and five times in the third for a 9-1 advantage, and then added to the lead with sixth in the fourth and two in fifth for the 17-1 final. Highlighting the scoring, Tyler Locklear had a two-run single and a grand slam home run in that stretch, while Ben Nippolt had a two-run home run.
Cameron Knox (3-4) took the loss, allowing nine runs on nine hits over three innings.
Jake Clark (0.1 IP, 5 R),
Beau Rottmann (2.2 IP, 3 R), and
James Springer (2.0 IP, 0 R) rounded out the Fordham pitching performances on Thursday.
Offensively, Fordham was limited to four hits in the game, as
David Kale (single), Semo (single),
Cian Sahler (double), and
T.J. Wachter (single) each had one hit.
Game two is set for 6:30 PM on Friday.
