Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham softball kept up nonconference action during its Atlantic 10 bye week with a doubleheader split against Kent State on Saturday, a 6-1 loss in game one and a 2-0 win in game two. With the results, the Rams move to 17-15 overall, while the Golden Flashes move to 12-19.
Fordham struggled to get anything going against Jessica LeBeau in game one, putting eight runners on over seven frames, with the lone run coming from starter
Devon Miller with a solo home run in the fifth inning, her second of the season. Miller took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, while striking out five, though it was a scoreless affair through four frames.
In game two, it took until the fifth inning again for the scoring to start, but this time it was all Fordham.
Makenzie McGrath tossed her first career shutout, holding Kent State to just three hits and a walk while striking out five, needing just 77 pitches for her sixth win of the year. The Rams had seven hits in game two, but it was just two that mattered the most – back-to-back solo home runs by
Rachel Hubertus and
Julia Martine in the fifth. For Hubertus, it was her 13
th of the year, already tied for 10
th in a single campaign, while for Martine it was her ninth.
Brianna Pinto,
Michaela Carter, and Martine each led the way with two hits on the day.
The Rams continue nonconference action with a one-off at Hofstra on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
