Bronx, N.Y. – (April 30, 2022) – Saint Joseph's Nate Thomas hit a three-run home run for the second straight day, while Matt McShane and Ryan Devine combined for 4.2 hitless innings of relief, as the Hawks took game two of a three-game Atlantic 10 series from the Fordham Rams, 4-2, at Houlihan Park on Saturday.
With the game scoreless through two innings, Saint Joseph's (24-16, 9-5 A10) opened the scoring in the third inning, as Nate Thomas hit a three-run home run to right for a 3-0 lead. It was his 13
th of the season.
The Hawks made it 4-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Luca Trigiani, before Fordham got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Rams (11-29, 4-10 A10) loaded the bases with two outs on an error and singles by
Chris Genaro and
Jack Harnisch.
Ryan Thiesse then hit a ground ball to shortstop that went under Trigiani's glove, allowing two runs to come across the plate to make it a 4-2 game.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Rams would get, as Matt McShane and Ryan Devine for 4.2 innings of no-hit relief. McShane earned the win, improving to 5-0, as he struck out six over 3.2 innings of relief, while Devine recorded his fifth save with a clean ninth inning and two strikeouts.
Fordham's pitching duo of
Cameron Knox and
Joseph Quintal pitched well in defeat, allowing a total of five hits in the game with a combined 12 strikeouts. Knox (3-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits over six innings with a career-high seven strikeouts, while Quintal had his best outing of the year, allowing just one hit over three innings with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Genaro led the attack, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The same two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at noon.
Prior to Saturday's game, Fordham baseball alumni dedicated a plaque to the late Dan Gallagher with the Gallagher family on hand.
