Washington, D.C. – Graduate student
Brianna Pinto stole the 73
rd base of her career, tying Krystle Henry ('07) for the all-time program record, in game one of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of George Washington on Saturday. With the results, the Rams fall to 9-12 overall and 1-3 to begin conference play, while the Colonials improve to 12-10 and 5-0, respectively.
Pinto singled in the top of the seventh with one out and quickly stole the record-tying bag. Just before that half-inning, the Colonials had taken a 5-4 lead, scoring all five runs in the sixth on a pair of home runs, one off
Devon Miller and one off
Emilee Watkins, after Miller had shut out the offense for five straight innings. Fordham got on the board quickly in the first with back-to-back solo home runs from
Julia Martine and
Rachel Hubertus. Martine padded the lead with a two-run triple in the fifth, scoring Pinto and
Kelly Bright. The top three in the order – Pinto, Martine, and Hubertus – all notched two hits and a run, with Bright and
Julia Petrovich, the latter singling as a pinch hitter, the other base knocks, with
Sarah Taffet also drawing a walk. Miller struck out four and just two of her four runs allowed were earned, though she was saddled with her sixth loss of the year.
In game two, Maddy Dwyer allowed just two baserunners through the first six frames – a Martine hit-by-pitch and a Taffet walk, before the Rams fought back furiously with five runs in the seventh inning.
Bailey Enoch,
Michaela Carter, and Taffet all singled to load the bases. Petrovich, pinch-hitting again, singled the opposite way to score Enoch and
Mallory McClellan, also off the bench, drew a walk. Martine singled in Carter and with the bases still loaded,
Sydney Wells drove a ball down the right field line, scoring two, but a good throw to home had Martine caught between third and home and the senior was tagged out heading back to third to end the game. Six Rams had a hit and both Martine and Taffet reached safely twice.
The Rams and Colonials wrap up the weekend tomorrow at noon.
