Conway, S.C. – Fordham softball began play at the Battle at the Beach on Friday, falling to the hosts, 4-0, and South Carolina, 8-3. With the day's results, the Rams move to 2-5 overall.
Fordham took an early 2-0 lead over the Gamecocks through a wild pitch and a
Sydney Wells RBI single. The Gamecocks plated seven runs in the second inning to take the lead from that point on.
Rachel Hubertus tallied her first home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth after South Carolina had added an eighth run in the top half of the frame and that capped the scoring.
Miller was saddled with the loss, her third, while
Bailey Enoch threw four one-run innings in relief.
Senior
Makenzie McGrath, fresh off her first career Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week nod, had a no-hit bid through five innings against the hosts in the nightcap, undone by a pair of home runs in the sixth. McGrath matched her career-high of five strikeouts. The Rams offense had just three hits – one each by
Kelly Bright,
Amanda Carey, and
Michaela Carter.
Fordham plays both opponents again tomorrow, 12:30 p.m. against South Carolina and 5:30 p.m. against Coastal Carolina.
