League Release
Â
Newport News, Va. – Fordham women's basketball has been picked to finish fourth in the annual Atlantic 10 head coaches' preseason poll, the league announced on Tuesday. Additionally, senior guard
Anna DeWolfe was selected to the preseason All-Conference First Team, while graduate guard
Asiah Dingle earned spots on both the Second and All-Defensive Teams.
Â
The Atlantic 10 announced its preseason awards and poll at the beginning of its
2022 Media Day, being broadcast all day on ESPN+. Fordham interim head coach
Candice Green along with Dingle and
Kaitlyn Downey will be featured from 3:45 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Â
The Rams garnered 183 points from the league's head coaches in a very tight trio between second and fourth place. Massachusetts received all 15 first-place votes and 225 points to be predicted as repeat champion. Between the two schools are La Salle (188) and Rhode Island (184) with VCU (152) rounding out the top-five. Saint Joseph's, Davidson, Richmond, Duquesne, and Dayton filled spots 6-10, in that order, while George Washington, Saint Louis, A-10 newcomers Loyola Chicago, George Mason, and St. Bonaventure filled out the remainder of the predicted standings.
Â
DeWolfe, a two-time First Team All-Conference honoree, became the first Ram to be named WBCA All-American Honorable Mention more than once, repeating the feat in the Spring. The Cumberland, Maine native reached 1,000 career points last year and enters this season 10
th all-time with 1,295 points, an average of 16.4 per game over 79 consecutive starts to begin her collegiate career. She finished second in the league last year with 17.8 points per game and was fifth nationally with an average of 38.3 minutes played.
Â
Dingle was selected to the Third Team at the conclusion of her first season in the Bronx after averaging 14.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.3 steals per contest, leading the team in the latter two. The Boston native was 60
th nationally in per-game steals, ranked third in the conference, and 59
th with 66 total thefts. If the prediction comes true for her spot on the All-Defensive squad, she'd become just the fourth Ram to do so.
Â
Fordham posted an 18-11 overall record and an 8-6 mark in league play to play as the sixth seed at last year's A-10 Championship, falling in the second round to the eventual champion Minutewomen. The Rams did secure yet another WNIT berth, however, their sixth in the past decade, but fell to Bucknell in the opening round. The team returns four of last year's starting five, welcome four freshmen to the program, and brought in the reigning Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in graduate transfer
Jada Dapaa.
Â
Opening night is set for Monday, November 7 against Yale at 5:30 p.m., the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
