Queens, N.Y. – (September 6, 2021) – An early first half goal by Andrew Bennett proved to be the difference on Monday night, as the St. John's Red Storm outlasted the Fordham Rams, 1-0 in men's soccer action at Belson Stadium in Queens.
St. John's scored the lone goal of the match in the 11
th minute, as a couple of quick passes between Lucas Bartlett and Brandon Knapp found Andrew Bennett at the six-yard box for his first goal of the season.
Fordham had a pair of quality chances in the first half to tie the game. In the 20
th minute,
Max Rogers launched a corner kick into the box where the goalkeeper was caught out of position. The ball landed at the feet of
Conrado Duhour for a shot that was knocked off the line by Matt Forster.
Then in the 33
rd minute,
Jack Sluys came in from the left side and blasted a shot from the top of the box, that was parried over the net by St. John's goalkeeper Luka Gavran.
In the second half, the Rams' best chance was in the 55
th minute right in front that almost equalized the match.
Matt Sloan chipped a cross that deflected to the middle of the box.
Luke McNamara got to the ball for a shot but was grabbed by Gavran just before crossing the line.
Gavran finished the game with four saves for the shutout, while Fordham's
Callum James had two saves.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, September 11
th, when the team travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 7:00 PM start.
