Volleyball Gets Opening Day Split at the Delaware Invitational

Rams Earn First Win of 2021 Over UMES; Come Up Short Against Host Delaware

Newark, Del. – (September 3, 2021) – The Fordham volleyball team made the trek down I-95 this weekend for the Delaware Invitational in Newark, Delaware, where the Rams began the tournament with two matches on Friday.
 
In the opening contest, the Rams earned their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.  Sets scores were 25-27, 26-24, 25-22, and 25-15.
 
After splitting the first two sets, Fordham took charge in the third set, hitting .302 in the set to .114 by the Hawks.  Whitley Moody and Isabel Fichtel each had four kills in the set to lead the Fordham attack.
 
The final set saw UMES struggle on offense, hitting -.033 as a team, as the Rams came up with a solid blocking effort with two in the set, and finishing the match with a team total of nine.

For Fordham, Moody had the top effort with a match-high 18 kills to go with five digs and four blocks, while Isabel Fichtel and Bella Ureña each had 11 kills and two blocks.  Megan Brzozowski had an all-around solid performance with 36 assists, nine digs, two aces, and two kills with Mallory Lipski having 14 digs and a career-high seven assists.
 
In match two of the day, Fordham fell to host Delaware in three sets, 25-20, 25-17, and 25-20.
 
Delaware hit well for the match at .296 as a team, which including a .375 clip in set two and .412 in set three.  The Rams hit .101 as a group, as they were held in check due to the 8.5 team blocks of the Blue Hens.
 
For the Rams, Moody once again led the offense with 15 kills to go with seven digs.  Lipski finished with a match-high 14 digs with Brzozowski having 13 assists and three digs.
 
Fordham concludes competition at the Delaware Invitational on Saturday with a 2:00 PM match against NJIT.
