Rams Fall to Quinnipiac, 3-2

Caitlin Kennedy & Milan Bornstein Net Penalty Kick Goals for the Rams

Bronx, N.Y. – (September 12, 2021) – It was a shootout at Jack Coffey Field on Sunday afternoon for the women's soccer match between the Fordham Rams and Quinnipiac Bobcats, as the teams combined for five goals, three of which were on penalty kicks.  However, it was the Bobcats that came away with the victory by a score of 3-2.

After 40 minutes of scoreless action, the Bobcats netted the opening goal of the game on penalty kick in the 43rd minute, after a foul in the box was assessed to Fordham.  Selena Salas then converted the penalty for her fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, Quinnipiac opened up a 2-0 advantage in the 54th minute, as Salas found a breaking Rebecca Cooke on a through ball for a breakaway. Cooke deked around Fordham goalkeeper Serena Mensah and tucked in her seventh goal of the year.

The Rams made it a 2-1 game in the 64th minute, converting on a penalty kick of their own, as Quinnipiac was called for a foul in the box.  Caitlin Kennedy made good on the kick, netting her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

The Bobcats would regain their two-goal lead in the 72nd minute, as the ball was cleared out of the box by Fordham.  Fleur Cordier lofted the ball back into the box for an oncoming Paige LaBerge, who was able to sneak the ball by Mensah for a 3-1 lead and her first of the year.

The Rams did not go away, scoring in the 82nd minute on another penalty kick, as this time it was a handball in the box by Quinnipiac that caused the penalty.  This time, Milan Bornstein converted the kick for her second marker of the year.

Fordham then received a corner kick in the final minute of regulation for one more chance at tying the game, but the ball was cleared away, ending the match in favor of Quinnipiac.

In net, Mensah made three saves for the Rams, with Meaghan Phillips having two for the Bobcats.

The Rams are next in action on Sunday, September 19th for their Atlantic 10 opener at La Salle, beginning at 1:00 PM.
