Orlando, Fla. – The sixth-seeded Fordham men's tennis squad got the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship off on a positive note with a 4-1 win over eleventh-seeded La Salle University at the USTA National Campus on Thursday.
The Rams opened the match slowly, dropping the doubles point.
Tom Russwurm and
Jofre Segarra fell at third doubles to Brandon Caban and Dylan Tull, 6-1, but
Max Green and
Alex Makatsaria evened things for Fordham with a 6-2 win at the second position over Nassim Fenjiro and Colin Lucius. The doubles point came down to first doubles where Rogelio Gonzalez and Connor Merrill squeaked by Fordham's
Fabian Mauritzson and
Lutwin de Macar, 7-5, to secure the points for the Explorers.
Fordham rebounded in singles play, winning all four of the competed matches for the win. Makatsaria got it started with a 6-3, 6-4 win at third singles over Merrill before de Macar put the Rams up 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lucius at the fourth position. Green extended the Fordham lead when he defeated Fenjiro at second singes, 7-5, 6-0, and Segarra clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-2, 7-6(2) win over Tull at the sixth spot.
The Rams now face third-seeded Richmond on Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
