South Orange, N.J. – The Fordham softball team fell at Seton Hall on Saturday, 12-6, in its first road contest of the 2021 campaign. With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-1 on the young season, while the Pirates improve to 1-6.
Fordham started quickly with a two-run first inning – redshirt junior
Rachel Hubertus knocked in
Madie Aughinbaugh and
Brianna Pinto with an opposite-way single. Against sophomore
Devon Miller, the Pirates were able to cut the deficit in half with a RBI single of their own. Two innings later and junior
Sarah Taffet, the walk-off winner on Friday, smashed a two-run bomb to center, scoring Aughinbaugh, to pad the lead. However, Kelsey Carr got to Miller again, this time with a three-run home run before a RBI double by Ally Taylor put Seton Hall in the lead for good.
The Pirates added four runs, three earned, against freshman
Bailey Enoch, making her collegiate pitching debut, in the fourth inning and two unearned runs in the fifth. In the top of the sixth,
Anne Marie Prentiss, who had entered the game earlier as the DP, ripped her first career home run to center. After Seton Hall drove in a final run on a sac fly against Prentiss, who entered the circle in relief of Enoch, the Rams tacked on an additional run of their own when Aughinbaugh's groundout scored
Michaela Carter.
Aughinbaugh went 0-for-1 but still produced two runs and a RBI after drawing two walks and reached via a hit by pitch, stealing two bases, as well. Pinto singled twice and scored once, while Taffet and Hubertus each notched a pair of RBIs. Miller was hit with the loss after allowing five runs over three frames, striking out three of her 17 batters faced. Three of Enoch's six runs were unearned as the freshman struck out a pair over two innings.
The Rams return home to host UMass-Lowell for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
