Bronx, N.Y. – (March 31, 2021) – Despite a three-hit afternoon by
Alvin Melendez, the Fordham baseball team came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
With the loss, Fordham goes to 11-5 on the year, while Seton Hall improved to 6-11.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Devin Hack plated two runs for Seton Hall on a single through the right side. Fordham cut into the Seton Hall lead in the seventh, when
Alvin Melendez crushed a solo home run to left, his first of the season.
The Pirates though used some aggressive baserunning in the eighth to extend their lead to 4-1. With runners at second and third, Alex Clyde put down a squeeze bunt that scored two runs, as Matt Toke never stopped running from second base.
The Rams tried to rally in the ninth, loading the bases with one out.
Jake Guercio connected on a leadoff double and moved to third on a single by
Jason Coules. After
Nick Labella drew a walk to load the bases,
Zach Selinger delivered a two-run double to left, scoring Guercio and Coules. That's as close as the Rams got, as the Pirates intentionally walked
Casey Brown with
Andy Semo hitting into a game-ending double play.
For Fordham,
Gabe Karslo (2-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts over a career-long six innings of work.
Declan Lavelle pitched two innings of relief, giving up two runs, while
Joseph Quintal pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
At the plate, Melendez was 3-for-4 with a home run, while Guercio, Coules, and Semo had one hit apiece.
The same two teams play game two of the series on Thursday at 4:00 PM.
