Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham softball team was firing on all cylinders today, with the pitchers dominating the University of Maine bats and
Julia Martine providing the offense with three home runs on the day as the Rams swept a doubleheader from the Black Bears, winning the first game, 4-1, and the nightcap, 7-1, on Bahoshy Field.
Â
With the wins, Fordham improves to 8-3 on the year while Maine falls to 1-5.
Â
In game two
Devon Miller struck out a career-high 15 batters, the most strikeouts recorded by a Fordham pitcher since Rachel Gillen fanned 15 against Furman in 2015.
"Great starting pitching from Augie and Devon today as they both competed and made a lot of quality pitches," Head coach
Melissa Inouye said, "Credit to Aubree and Amanda for being solid behind the plate as they are very much a part of their quality outings and strikeouts. Our hitters had a lot of quality at-bats - what a day for
Julia Martine, she was seeing the ball really well. Overall, two solid wins with good team energy. We're excited for two more games in great weather tomorrow."
Â
Game One
Martine provided most of the offense, breaking a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fourth, and then giving the Rams a 3-0 lead with a two-run shot in the sixth.
Rachel Hubertus followed Martine's second blast with one of her own to put the Rams up 4-0 in the sixth.
Â
Madie Aughinbaugh was dominating in the circle, holding the black Bears hitless for the first five and one-third, before allowing a single in the sixth.
Â
Maine got to Aughinbaugh in the seventh with an RBI double but that would be it as the right-hander improved her record to 5-0 on the year with nine strikeouts.
Â
Game Two
Miller was almost flawless in game two, allowing just three hits to go with the 15 strikeouts as she improved to 3-2 on the season.
Â
Martine again got the offense going with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, her third of the day and fourth of the year.
Â
The Rams then added four runs in the second, starting with a
Michaela Carter RBI single. Fordham then scored a run on a wild pitch and two more later in the inning on an error.
Â
The Black Bears made it a 4-1 game with a run in the top of the third before the Rams answered with a
Bella Ayala RBI single in the fourth and closed out the scoring with a Hubertus RBI double in the sixth.
Â
The two teams square off for another doubleheader tomorrow on Bahoshy Field at 11:00 a.m.
