Jamaica, N.Y. – Even though the weather outside was relatively calm, inside the Carnesecca Arena the Fordham University men's basketball program ran into a storm. The Red Storm. St. John's used a suffocating defense, forcing 18 Fordham turnovers, and timely shooting to upend the Rams, 83-69, on Sunday night.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 6-4 on the year while St. Johns improve to 6-2.
The Rams were led by graduate student forward
Chuba Ohams, who had his second straight 20-point game, and he added six rebounds, while graduate student guard
Darius Quisenberry added 16 points and seven rebounds and junior guard
Antonio Daye, Jr. finished with 13 points.
Fordham led by one, 22-21, following a Quisenberry three midway through the first half but St. John's outscored the Rams 25-11 over the final ten minutes of the half to take a 46-33 lead at the break.
The Red Storm built their advantage to as many as 19 twice in the second half, the final time at 60-41 with 14:49 remaining. The Rams wouldn't back down, responding with ten unanswered points to make it a 60-51 contest on a
Josh Colon-Navarro four-point play just over a minute later.
The Rams got the St. John's led down to nine twice more in the game, the final time at 73-64 on a Daye three with 6:08 left but that was as close as they would get.
