Men’s Soccer Explodes With Five Goals in Win Over Davidson

Matt Sloan Scores Twice, While Galen Flynn, Florian Deletioglu and Luke McNamara Each Net a Goal

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 6, 2021) – Leading 1-0 after 60 minutes, the Fordham men's soccer team put the offense into overdrive, scoring four more goals over the next 20-plus minutes to record a 5-1 Atlantic 10 win over the Davidson Wildcats to kick off a three-match homestand at Jack Coffey Field.
 
With the win, Fordham evened its league record at 2-2 with a 4-7-1 overall mark, while Davidson fell to 6-4-1 on the year, 1-2-1 in the Atlantic 10.
 
Fordham opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a Davidson miscue.  The Davidson defender misplayed a backpass that Fordham's Matt Sloan was able to loft over the goalkeeper and inside the left side of the net for his third goal of the season.
 
The Rams then exploded with four second half goals to lead by a 5-0 count.

The first second half tally was in the 62nd minute, as Paul Makaj chested down a long ball to Florian Deletioglu, who put forward a lead pass to a breaking Galen Flynn.  Flynn fought off a Davidson defender and the goalkeeper to chip the ball into the open net from the penalty spot for his second goal of the season.
 
Just five minutes later, the Rams cashed in again, as Makaj took a shot from 25 yards out that was parried away by the Davidson goalkeeper, but the ball went right to Sloan, who tucked the rebound just under the crossbar for his second marker of the night ad fourth overall.
 
The Rams would add an unassisted goal by Deletioglu in the 81st minute off a scramble in the box, as well as a penalty kick goal by Luke McNamara, after Savvas Christoforou was taken down in the box by a Davidson player.  The five goals were the most by the Rams since a 5-0 win over Holy Cross in 2019.
 
The only blemish on the night was a goal in the final seconds by Davidson to break up the shutout for Fordham goalkeeper Nick Buchholz.  Buchholz finished with four saves in the win, while Giacomo Piccardo had four stops for the Wildcats.
 
The Rams continue their homestand on Saturday, October 9th, when they host George Mason for a 7:00 PM match.
