Late Goal Downs Rams at URI

Schae Groton Scores First Career Goal for Fordham

Kingston, R.I. – (October 3, 2021) – Rhode Island's Brooke Cavino netted the game-tying goal and assisted on the game-winning tally, as URI took a 2-1 Atlantic 10 women's soccer contest from the Fordham Rams at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, R.I.

With no scoring over the first 65 minutes, Fordham had a pair of chances that forced a save by URI goalkeeper Faith Hutchins, the second of which by Caitlin Kennedy looked headed for the top left corner, but Hutchins knocked the ball away with a diving punch.

The third straight chance was the charm for Fordham, breaking through with the opening goal of the contest.  After a foul in the 70th minute, Claudia Cuicani booted a long ball into the center of the box that Schae Groton got a header on, knocking the ball in the left side of goal for her first career goal.

Rhode Island then tested Fordham netminder Serena Mensah, but like her counterpart made two stops on shots from Laila Rosenthal and Emma Derry, but a third chance four minutes later tied the match at one.  Alyssa Fleming's corner kick was headed inside the right post by Brooke Cavino for her second goal of the season in the 74th minute.

Then in the 86th minute, Cavino found Hope Santaniello for a shot from outside the right side of the box that just went over the fingertips of Mensah into the top right corner of the goal for her first of the year, which turned into the game-winning tally.

In net, Mensah posted five saves for Fordham, while Hutchins had six saves for URI.

Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, October 10th, as the team hosts Saint Joseph's at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
