Washington, D.C. – The Fordham volleyball team picked up a road conference victory on Saturday, sweeping George Washington, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23. With the win, the Rams improve to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in league play.
Fordham controlled most of the opening frame and then used two late rallies to take sets two and three and the win. The match began with Fordham's leading attacker,
Whitley Moody, notching the first of her 12 kills on the afternoon. A
Mallory Lipski ace and a
Joey Landeros kill made it 3-0. The Rams held sway for the remainder of the set and, though the Colonials got within two late, 23-21, a pair of Moody kills saw things out.
Down as much as five in the second set, the Rams rallied with a 9-3 run, including four unanswered, to retake the lead briefly late in the second. The schools traded points until a bad set and an attack error gave Fordham a two-point cushion, which preceded a
Bella Ureña kill and another attack error by the hosts to make it 2-0 overall.
The third set saw several mini runs by each team. George Washington led late, 19-15, just after a Fordham timeout but a Lauren LaBeck service error gave the visitors back their serve. A solo block by
Megan Brzozowski led to a
Ryan Naumann ace and then a Brzozowski kill, tying the match at 19 and forcing a Colonial timeout. Salem Yohannes' kill out of the break put the hosts back up one but a pair of Moody kills put Fordham back ahead for good. An
Aria De La Rosa kill, a Moody ace, a Ureña kill, and a GW service error capped the match.
Moody finished the match with a 12-kill, 11-dig double-double, with Brzozowski doing the same with 32 assists, a team-high 14 digs, plus two kills, two aces, and two blocks. Ureña and De La Rosa combined for a further 17 kills, while
Chloe Pejouan led the defense with five blocks, one solo.
Fordham returns home for six consecutive home matches, beginning with Dayton next Friday night at 6 p.m.
