Women’s Soccer Takes On Dayton & George Mason To Close Out Regular Season

Fordham Travels to Dayton on Thursday, while Hosting George Mason on Sunday

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 20, 2021) – The Fordham Rams close out their Atlantic 10 women's soccer regular season schedule this week with a pair of league matches against Dayton and George Mason.

Fordham (3-11-2, 1-6-1 A10) heads into the final week of the regular season, after a tough loss on Senior Day to Massachusetts, where the Rams fell short of a late comeback against the Minutewomen.  Trailing 2-0, Milan Bornstein netted her fourth goal of the year to cut the deficit in half, but Jenna Devine late chance in the final minutes was stopped, leaving the Rams with a 2-1 loss.

Fordham starts the week by traveling to Dayton on Thursday night.  Dayton (9-5-2, 6-2 A10) is currently tied for second in the league standings with Saint Louis, following back-to-back wins over George Washington (4-2) and St. Bonaventure (3-1).  The Flyers are led by Itala Gemelli, who has a team-best 10 goals, four of which are game-winners, and 22 points on the season.  In net, Madelyn Dewey has started all 16 games, posting a 1.07 goals against average and four shutouts.

George Mason (5-10-1, 3-4-1 A10) comes to Jack Coffey Field on Sunday for the regular season finale after playing Rhode Island on Thursday.  The Patriots enter the week tied for the final playoff spot with La Salle,

SERIES HISTORY: On Thursday, it will be the 22nd meeting between Fordham and Dayton with the Flyers holding a 15-3-3 series lead.  The last meeting was a 3-0 win for the Flyers at Dayton in 2019, while the last Fordham win came in 2016 by a 2-1 score.

For Sunday, it will be the eighth meeting between the Rams and Patriots, with George Mason leading the series at 3-1-3.  Fordham got the win in overtime in the last meeting in 2019 as Maura Holst scored twice in a 2-1 victory.

LAST TIME OUT: The Fordham Rams celebrated Senior Day at Jack Coffey Field on Sunday, honoring eight student-athletes prior to taking on the Massachusetts Minutewomen in women's soccer action.  The Minutewomen would spoil the day, getting goals from Karina Groff and Olivia Gouldsbury for a 2-1 decision over the Fordham Rams.

After a scoreless first half, UMass cracked the scoreboard in the 54th minute.  Chandler Pedolzky dribbled to the center of the offensive zone and passed the ball to the right for Karina Groff.  Groff then slotted a shot to the left side of the net for the 1-0 edge for her fourth goal of the season.

The Minutewomen increased the lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute, as Pedolzky set up Olivia Gouldsbury on the right side of the box.  Gouldsbury then drove to the center and found the bottom left corner for her marker of the season.

The Rams answered back with a goal just over a minute later, converting on the second of back-to-back corner kicks.  Alexandra Taylor found Milan Bornstein in the center of the box for the deflection into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Fordham then had a premium opportunity in the final minutes to tie the game, as the ball was loose in front with the UMass goalkeeper and a defender on the ground.  Jenna Devine has a couple of shot attempts but was unable to lift the ball over the keeper with Bella Mendoza making one final save before time ran out on the Rams.

In net, Mendoza had two saves in the second half in relief of Megan Olszewski, who made one save in the first half.  Maria O'Sullivan recorded one save for the Rams.

CLOSIN' IN: Fordham fifth-year senior Milan Bornstein has already put together a career-best season, netting a career-high four goals and eight points, and made it even more memorable year last week.  With her start against VCU on Thursday, Bornstein appeared in her 81st career game, which broke Brooke Salmon's school record of 80 games played from 2015-18.

KENNEDY STREAKIN': Junior forward Caitlin Kennedy has had a superb 2021 with five goals and 11 points, both of which are career-highs.  She has been named Offensive Player of the Week twice by the league, had a four-game goal scoring streak, and had a six-match point streak snapped against La Salle.
