Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Drops Opener to George Washington

Joel Soriano leads Rams with Double-Double

Bronx, N.Y. – It has been 293 days since the Fordham men's basketball squad has able to play a game. Despite the long break, the Rams were in familiar territory, facing the same team they played 293 days ago in a first round Atlantic 10 Championship win. Unfortunately, the results were not as good today as George Washington used a big first half to defeat the Rams, 71-47, in Fordham's season opener.

The Colonials jumped out to an eight-point lead, 13-5, eight minutes into the game as the Rams suffered shooting woes, hitting just three of their first 13 field goal attempts.

George Washington got the lead to 18 at the break, 38-20, but the Rams notched the first five points of the second half on a Joel Soriano layup and Ty Perry three-pointer, to get within 13, 38-25, but that was as close as they would get.

Josh Navarro led the Rams with 14 points while Soriano picked up a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Takeaways
• This year's season opener is the latest opener in school history for the Rams (the previous latest opener was on December 14, 1923).

• The GW win snaps a Fordham four-game winning streak against the Colonials (Fordham's longest winning streak against an A-10 team is five vs. UMass).

• The Rams are now 76-36 (.679) in season openers since 1908, 81-20 (.802) in home openers.

• Because of COVID delays, the Fordham Rams are one of six teams that have yet to play a game in 2020 (not including Ivy and Patriot League schools).

Joel Soriano has recorded a double-double in six of his last seven games dating back to last year.

• Freshmen Yame Butler and Julian Dozier made their collegiate debuts.
