Bronx, N.Y. – 50 years is a long time. On December 10, 1970, head coach Judith Hoyer and 13 student-athletes traveled to nearby NYU for Fordham women's basketball's first-ever varsity contest, prevailing, 37-22. Since that win, the Rams have played just under 1,400 games, have seen 237 student-athletes don the maroon and white, have played under 12 head coaches, have won three conference championships, and competed in 11 postseason tournaments, including three trips to the NCAA tournament.
By the end of that first decade, Fordham was playing Pat Summitt's nationally-ranked Tennessee Vols in the final eight of the national AIAW tournament. Half a decade later, alumni and fan-favorite Pugsley's Pizza opened its doors in 1985 and, nine years after that the program won its first title – the 1994 Patriot League championship. Fast forward to the 2020-21 campaign and the Rams are a perennial Atlantic 10 championship contender, having won the trophy in 2014 and 2019.
This season, Fordham athletics will continue to celebrate women's basketball's 50
th anniversary in a variety of ways. Ram fans can look forward to:
- An in-depth breakdown of the past 50 years of Fordham women's basketball
- All-Decade teams
- Zoom interviews with alumni from each decade and our current student-athletes
- "Where Are They Now?" spotlights
and much, much more! Though fans may not be able to physically be in the Rose Hill Gym this season to cheer on the Rams, there will be plenty of opportunities to join virtually!
To help mark this historic year and to support the program going forward, consider
making a donation today! Our goal is to reach 237 donors to celebrate the number of women who have donned the maroon & white!
Stay tuned for features, giveaways, and more! As always, continue to follow and support the Rams on social media - @FordhamWBB on Twitter and Instagram, plus Facebook!
