Margaret Roughley's 85
th minute penalty proved to be the difference in Sunday afternoon's Atlantic 10 opener at Coffey Field, the Rams defeating St. Bonaventure, 1-0, on Alumni Day. With the win, Fordham improves to 2-6-2 on the year and 1-0 to begin conference play, while the Bonnies fall to 4-5 and 0-1, respectively.

It took a while for the match to get going, with each team notching just one shot over the first 45 minutes in the blistering heat. After the intermission, though, the tempo picked up, especially for the hosts. Fordham outshot the Bonnies, 9-2, in the second period and 10-3 overall, including six shots on target to their one. Lauren Malcolm made five saves on the afternoon, while
Kelly LaMorte was forced to make just one.
Roughley's goal had been coming, as Fordham continued to put pressure on St. Bonaventure. Seconds before,
Hope Baisley saw a shot blocked and a foul was committed on the rebound. Roughley stepped up and powered her penalty to the right, her first goal of the year and eighth for her career. Her and
Maura Holst each recorded two shots, both on target, to lead the team, while Baisley and
Marissa Stanco each had two. St. Bonaventure's Christine Napoli had two of the Bonnies' three shots.
The shutout was LaMorte's fourth of the year, moving her into a tie for third all-time with Megan Fitzgerald ('16), who was in attendance today. Another shutout and the senior will be tied with Rachel Suther ('12) for second.
Fordham is back on the road for a pair of A-10 matches coming up. The Rams will play at George Washington on Thursday at 3 p.m. and then at Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m. Their next home game will be against George Mason on October 3 at 7 p.m.
