Softball Downs George Washington, 4-2, for First A-10 Series Win of the Year

Madie Aughinbaugh Goes the Distance, Drives in Two, while Molly Roark Provides the Go-Ahead Runs

Washington, D.C. – The Fordham softball team picked up its first Atlantic 10 series win of the year on Sunday by defeating George Washington, 4-2, in Sunday's rubber game. Madie Aughinbaugh contributed a pair of RBIs and went the distance in the circle, while Molly Roark provided the game-winning runs. With the win, the Rams improve to 9-17 overall on the season and 2-1 in league play, while the Colonials fall to 22-9 and 1-2, respectively.

"I'm proud of the team for making adjustments throughout today's game. We got some key quality at-bats in the sixth and that all started from Jordy being the leadoff spark we needed, as she had a good swing for a double," Head coach Melissa Inouye said, "Aughie came up big tying the game with back-to-back doubles, Rachel drawing a walk, Maria moving the runners over, and Molly stepping up with a key two-run double behind in the count. Aughie competed all game and really threw some quality pitches to get out of a few jams. Overall a good team win as everyone contributed in some capacity."

George Washington took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second, both coming on RBI singles, before Aughinbaugh settled down and kept the hosts off the board the rest of the way. The junior provided two of the biggest hits of the afternoon with her own RBI singles in the third and sixth frames, the latter tying the game briefly before Roark's two-run double to the left centerfield gap three batters later. Aughinbaugh's third-inning single came with two outs to score Deanna Burbridge from second, who had singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Aughinbaugh dealt with runners in scoring position in every inning except the sixth but escaped five of them.

Aughinbaugh was the lone Ram to tally a multi-hit effort off Sierra Lange although six others reached base once, four of them scoring. Aughinbaugh picked up her fifth win of the year and second of the weekend with seven innings of two-run ball. Her two complete games this weekend move her into and out of a tie with Jaime Giguere ('04) and Michele Daubman ('15) for sixth-most all-time, now one behind former teammate Lauren Quense ('18) for fifth. She also moved past Giguere into eighth all-time with 386.1 career innings pitched and is one away from 40 wins and a tie with Chelsea Plimpton ('11) for seventh all-time.

Fordham has another nonconference midweek match-up upcoming this Wednesday at Rutgers with first pitch set for 4 p.m. The Rams will then travel to George Mason for a three-game set next weekend before three straight weekends at home.
