Atlanta, Ga. – The Fordham softball team kicked off this weekend's I-75 Classic with a pair of close losses, falling to Georgia Tech, 1-0 and 4-3, at Mewborn Field. With the losses, the Rams fall to 5-11 overall, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-6.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between
Madie Aughinbaugh and Morgan Bruce. The duo fired off five scoreless innings each until the Yellow Jackets plated one run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single. Fordham could muster just three hits and two walks against Bruce, while Aughinbaugh allowed just six hits, walking none, with five strikeouts.
Maria Trivelpiece led the way with a single and a walk.
The Rams combined for 15 hits in game two but pushed across just three runs against the combination of Naomi Dickerson and Amber Johns, leaving 11 on base. Georgia Tech struck first against
Anne Marie Prentiss with a three-run third, which Fordham answered right away in the top-half of the fourth, pushing across a pair of runs. With two outs and the bases empty, the Rams rattled off four straight singles and a hit by pitch, but left the bases loaded. The visitors were able to tie the contest up in the sixth when
Brianna Pinto singled in
Deanna Burbridge, who had doubled with one out, but the Yellow Jackets scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the frame off
Makenzie McGrath in relief, again with two outs.
Burbridge, who singled in game one, and
Chelsea Skrepenak each tallied three hits. Prentiss and Pinto each notched a pair of singles, as well, with the latter reaching a third time via a hit by pitch. Prentiss allowed the three runs on four hits with two strikeouts over her three frames, while McGrath allowed the one run on two hits, a walk, and a season-high three punchouts, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Fordham next plays a doubleheader at Georgia State tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
