Orlando, Fla. - The Fordham softball team suffered a pair of defeats on Saturday on day two of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. The Rams fell late, 6-3, to the Fighting Irish and, 5-0, to Iowa. With the day's results, Fordham falls to 5-8 overall.
The Rams started well in game one on Saturday, taking a 3-1 lead over Notre Dame, who have received votes in the two national polls to start the year, into the sixth inning. The Fighting Irish took advantage of a lead-off single and an error to retake the lead for good, 4-3, on a three-run home run. Notre Dame added two more runs in the frame. Junior
Madie Aughinbaugh had held them to just one run before that, a first-inning RBI single.Â
Freshman
Julia Martine, off the bench and in her first collegiate at-bat, tied the game up in the second by driving in
Rachel Hubertus with a single in the second. Fordham added two more runs on bases-loaded walks by
Chelsea Skrepenak and
Jordy Storm. That duo plus Hubertus, who walked twice, and
Maria Trivelpiece, who singled twice and walked, reached base multiple times.Â
The Rams struggled in their rematch with Iowa in game two, being held to one Skrepenak single and a
Gianna Ranieri walk.
Anne Marie Prentiss held the Hawkeyes to four runs over her six frames.Â
Fordham wraps up the Citrus Classic tomorrow at 9 a.m. against UAB.Â
