Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short at Rhode Island

Johannes Pieles Scores First Goal of the Season for Fordham

Kingston, R.I. – (October 5, 2019) – Rhode Island's Edvin Akselsen netted a goal and two assists, while Filippo Tamburini added a goal and an assist, as URI topped the Fordham Rams, 3-1, in men's soccer action on Saturday night.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-7-1 overall, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island improved to 5-3-2 on the year, 2-1 in the league.

Fordham got off to a great start, scoring right away in the fourth minute.  Savvas Christoforou ripped a shot off the crossbar, which Johannes Pieles was able to head in the rebound for his first goal of the season.

Just over nine minutes later, Rhode Island evened the game at one, as Filippo Tamburini netted his fifth goal of the season, as the ball was touched past Fordham goalkeeper Konstantin Weis, while sliding through the box.

Later in the first half, URI grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute, when Edvin Akselsen took a low shot to the back corner.

Rhode Island then increased their lead in the 75th minute to 3-1, as Stavros Zarokostas finished off a hard cross by Akselsen for his third of the season.

Fordham tried to cut into the deficit, as the Rams were awarded a penalty kick on the 89th minute, but Joergen Oland was stopped by Stefan Schmidt to secure the win.

Schmidt ended up with nine saves for Rhode Island, while Weis had seven stops for the Rams.

The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on October 8th, when the Rams travel to Seton Hall for a 6:00 PM match.
