New York, N.Y. – (August 30, 2018) – Hofstra's Jenn Buoncore netted two goals and an assist, while Lucy Shepherd had one tally, as the Pride edged out the Fordham Rams, 3-1, in the women's soccer home opener at Jack Coffey Field.
Hofstra got out of the gate quickly with an opportunity by Sabrina Bryan in the second minute, that Fordham's
Kelly LaMorte made the save right in front of the Fordham goal. The Pride would get the initial marker of the game moments later when, Lucy Shepherd scored from 10 yards out for her first of the season.
The score was 2-0 in the 20
th minute, as Hofstra created a turnover in the Fordham half of the field with Bryan finding Jenn Buoncore for a shot inside the far post for her first of the year.
Fordham cut the deficit in half in the 33
rd minute, as after a foul,
Margaret Roughley launched a free kick from 25 yards inside the right corner of the net for her first tally of the season.
With the score at 2-1 in the second half, Hofstra regained its two-goal advantage, when Buoncore netted her second of the game on a rebound off a blocked shot taken by Jordan Littleboy in the 49
th minute.
Kelly LaMorte made a season-high six saves on Thursday.
The Rams almost cut the lead back to one in the 77
th minute.
Kendall Dandridge made a nice play to keep the ball in play on the Hofstra endline, putting a cross in that grazed the crossbar.
Juliana Mascelli tried to head home the rebound for Fordham, but went wide of goal, leaving the game as a 3-1 decision.
In net, LaMorte finished with a season-high six saves, while Jenna Borresen and Ashley Wilson each played a half for Hofstra.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 2
nd, when the Rams travel to Lehigh for a 1:00 PM match
