Arlington, Va. – (May 24, 2018) – George Washington's Dominic D'Alessandro went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Nathan Woods tossed a complete game, seven-hit shutout, as the Colonials eliminated the Fordham Rams from the 2018 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship by a score of 5-0 at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Thursday.
With the loss, Fordham finishes its season at 35-19-1, while George Washington improved to 31-25 on the year and will face the winner of the Richmond-Davidson game on Friday.
Fordham looked poised to open the scoring in both the first and second inning, but left the bases loaded in the first and two runners on in the second inning without scoring.
The Colonials then grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Dominic D'Alessandro connected on a double and scored on a single by Nate Fassnacht.
George Washington made it, 3-0, in the fourth, when D'Alessandro hit a two-run home run to left, his eight of the season.
Alvin Melendez had two hits versus GW.
D'Alessandro continued his one-person attack on the Rams, helping George Washington extend the lead further in the sixth. He drew a leadoff walk followed by a single by Fassnacht, which ended Fordham starter
Ben Greenberg's day. Matt Cosentino then singled to left off
Matt Mikulski, scoring D'Alessandro for a 4-0 lead.
Fordham again threatened to score in the seventh, when
Billy Godrick doubled to left with two outs, while
Jake MacKenzie reached on an infield single.
Alvin Melendez then hit a shot to right, but it hung up long enough for the fly out to end the threat.
The Colonials then made it 5-0 in the bottom half of the inning. D'Alessandro did the damage again with an RBI-single to left, scoring Steven Barkamian from third.
The five-run cushion was enough for Nathan Woods, as he threw the complete game shutout, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the year.
Greenberg (6-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings of work with three strikeouts.
Matt Mikulski tossed two innings of relief, giving up one run with three strikeouts, while
Kyle Martin had a scoreless eighth inning. At the plate, MacKenzie and Melendez were both 2-for-4, while Godrick,
Justin Bardwell, and
C.J. Vazquez each had one hit.
