Baseball Shuts Out URI, 4-0

Greenberg Tosses Seven Shutout Innings, while Goulard Leads the Offense with Three Hits

Bronx, N.Y. – (April 7, 2018) – Fordham's Ben Greenberg tossed seven shutout innings, while Brian Goulard went 3-for-4 with an RBI, as the Rams shut out the Rhode Island Rams, 4-0, at Houlihan Park on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Fordham improved to 17-9-1 overall, 3-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island fell to 7-22 on the year, 1-7 in the league.
 
Fordham opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Jake MacKenzie hit a drive to right, that the rightfielder lost in the sun for a triple with MacKenzie then scoring on a wild pitch.
 
The Rams made it 2-0 in the fourth, when Reiss Knehr plated Nick Labella from third with a squeeze bunt, after Labella reached on a double and moved to third on a single by Jake Baker.
 
Fordham then extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.  Matt Tarabek doubled down the left field line with one out, and then scored from second on a passed ball.  Justin Bardwell and C.J. Vazquez followed with back-to-back singles, with Brian Goulard then singling through the right side to score Bardwell.

Rhode Island would put a rally together in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate.  Fordham reliever Kyle Martin though was up to the task, striking out the side to earn his third save of the season and completing the shutout.
 
Ben Greenberg (4-1) was outstanding for Fordham, allowing just one hit and two walks over seven innings with six strikeouts.  Brian Weissert also contributed a scoreless inning in the eighth with two strikeouts.
 
At the plate, Goulard was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while MacKenzie and Tarabek each had two hits and a run scored.
 
The rubber game between these two teams will be on Sunday at noon.
