Bronx, N.Y. – A group of
Joseph Chartouny's family members made the drive down from Montreal for today's game against the University of Maine in the Rose Hill Gym and Chartouny made sure that it was worth their while, scoring 21 points and matching his career-high with eleven rebounds, to lead the Rams to a 67-66 overtime win over the Black Bears.
With the win, Fordham improves to 3-4 on the year while Maine falls to 1-7.
Chartouny, who scored 12 of his 21 points in the second half and four more in the overtime period, added five assists and four steals. He was joined in double figures by junior forward
Prokop Slanina and senior guard
Will Tavares, who each scored 15 points, with Tavares adding seven rebounds.
The Rams took a 60-57 lead with 1:06 left in regulation on a Chartouny three-point play. But Ilker Er buried a three-pointer with 42 seconds to knot the game at 60. Chartouny missed a jumper with 19 ticks on the clock before
Perris Hicks stole the ball from the Black Bears with six seconds left and dribbled to the three-point line but his game-winning attempt bounced out.
Neither team scored over the first three minutes of overtime before Chartouny gave the Rams a 62-60 lead with a layup at the 1:55 mark. A pair of Hicks free throws 17 seconds later bumped the Fordham lead to four, 64-60, and the Rams led by four again, 65-61, with 18 seconds left before two Celio Araujo free throws cut the Fordham lead back to two, 65-63, four seconds later.
Chartouny made one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining and then stole the ball on Maine's ensuing possession and was fouled, converting one more free throw, before Araujo hit a buzzer-beating three for the 67-66 final.
