Bronx, N.Y. – Behind two goals in the first 29 minutes of action, the Fordham women's soccer team won its third straight contest on Thursday night, posting a 2-0 victory over the Iona Gaels at Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improved to 4-1-1 on the season, while Iona fell to 0-6-1. It marked the ninth straight meeting between the two schools that Fordham has posted a shutout win.
Fordham started the scoring in the seventh minute off an Iona miscue. Off a Fordham corner kick, Amber Crispin fouled
Carlie Wagner in the box with the referee awarding a penalty kick to Fordham.
Nicole Bates then stepped up to the spot and scored into the lower right corner of the net for her first tally of the year.
In the 28
th minute, the Rams almost made it 2-0, as
Clara Gastaldi weaved her wave through multiple defenders toward the right side of the box. Gastaldi then shot from 15 yards looking for the left side of goal, but the ball hit the post and was cleared.

The Rams kept pressing and did get the two-goal edge in the 29
th minute.
Natalie Sims blasted a shot off an Iona defender, where the rebound came to
Margaret Roughley at the top of the box. She then snuck a shot just inside the left post for her second goal of the season.
The Rams controlled the game from there, posting their third consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. Fordham goalkeeper
Adaeze Obinelo made one save to keep the clean sheet, which was an important one in the 69
th minute on Brianna Hernandez. Obinelo came out of goal to challenge Hernandez, and just got a piece of her shot to force it wide of goal.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 11
th, as the Rams travel to Hartford for a match-up with the Hawks at 2:00 PM.
