South Orange, N.J. – Two seasons ago, Fordham's
Sydney White thought she scored her first career goal in a game at Iona, but a referee decision took it away, awarding an own goal on the play. On Thursday night, White finally avenged that moment, netting the opening goal in a 2-0 win for the Fordham Rams over the Seton Hall Pirates at Owen T. Carroll Field.
With the win, Fordham improved to 2-1-1 on the year, while Seton Hall fell to 2-2-0. It was Fordham's first win over a BIG EAST school since 2010, which was also against Seton Hall.
For first 42 minutes, there wasn't much to report with each side having just one shot each. However, in the 43
rd minute, things changed, as Fordham's
Rachel Collage hit a high ball into the box from just over the midfield stripe. The ball was headed to the right side by a Seton Hall defender, where
Sydney White pounced on the ball with a half volley shot from 22 yards out that found the top left corner of the goal to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Goalkeeper Adaeze Obinelo record her second shutout of the season on Thursday.
Fordham added to its lead in the 56
th minute, taking advantage of a Seton Hall miscue. A cross was put into the box from the right side and it hit a Seton Hall defender's arm for a handball, awarding a penalty kick to the Rams.
Brooke Salmon stepped up to the spot and buried a shot into the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead. It was Salmon's second goal of the season.
The Rams' defense was in lock down mode for the majority of the game, giving up just two shots to the Pirates, and only one was on goal. Fordham goalkeeper
Adaeze Obinelo recorded one save for her second shutout of the season and third of her career.
The Fordham women's soccer team will finally get a home game after four straight road contests on Sunday, September 4
th, when the Rams host Manhattan College in the Battle of the Bronx, beginning at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
