Photo GalleryBronx, N.Y. - After a tough loss on Friday night, the Fordham baseball team rebounded on Saturday behind a stellar pitching performance from
Greg Weissert and
Anthony DiMeglio, as they combined for a three-hit, 8-0 shutout of the Rhode Island Rams at Houlihan Park.
Â
The win moves Fordham back to the .500 mark at 18-18 overall, 5-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island goes to 13-16 on the year, 5-3 in the league.
Â
Fordham opened the scoring in the top of the second with a single run.Â
Ian Edmiston poked a double to left center with one out, bringing
Ryan Mahoney to the plate. Mahoney struck out swinging, but the ball got away on a wild pitch. Rhode Island catcher Chase Livingston threw toward first base to complete the out, but the ball hit Mahoney in the arm, as he was running in the baseline, and deflected away. Edmiston took advantage of the deflection, and scored on the error.
Â
The Maroon and White added to the lead with a four-run barrage in the sixth inning, which began with a solo home run to left by
Ryan McNally, his team-leading seventh of the season.Â
Luke Stampfl followed with a single through the left side and later scored on a double by
Mark Donadio down the left field line. After a bunt single by
Jason Lundy put runners at the corners, Edmiston laid down the safety squeeze bunt to score Donadio from third.Â
Ryan Mahoney then reached on an infield single with
Joseph DeVito plating the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.
Greg Weissert allowed just two hits and struck out eight on Saturday.Â
Fordham then sealed the game with a three-run eighth inning, making it an 8-0 ballgame.Â
Joseph Runco had an RBI-double to right in the frame, while
Justin Bardwell connected on a two-run single to left.
Â
The eight runs were more than enough for Fordham's pitching duo of
Greg Weissert and
Anthony DiMeglio. Weissert improved to 2-3 on the year, allowing just two hits and a walk over eight innings with eight strikeouts. DiMeglio pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to finish out the win.
Â
At the plate, Stampfl was 3-for-5 with a double and a stolen base, while McNally was 2-for-4 with a home run and a stolen base. Â Donadio and Mahoney also had two hits and a run scored each for the Rams.
Â
The same two teams will have the rubber game of their Atlantic 10 series on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
