Varsity 8 Takes Gold at Murphy Cup

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Fordham rowing squad opened its spring season on a high note as the varsity 8 won gold at the 34th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
 
The varsity 8 won its heat in a time of 6:42.67, almost seven seconds ahead of Holy Cross and well in front of Lehigh, Hamilton and La Salle. In the Grand Final the Rams faced stiff competition from Rutgers but beat the Scarlet Knights to the finish line by 2.18 seconds, covering the course in a time of 6:43.92. Following Rutgers were Bates, Temple, Navy and Drexel.
 
The Rams also had success in the junior varsity 8, placing fourth in the Grand Final. The Fordham junior varsity 8 won its heat in a time of 6:56.31, easily beating Connecticut to the line and ahead of Villanova, Buffalo B and Delaware B. In the Grand Final, the Rams placed fourth. Navy won the race followed by Temple and Saint Joseph's, who was just 1.74 seconds ahead of Fordham. The Rams outpaced George Washington and Drexel to the line.
 
Fordham also raced a varsity 4 in the regatta, taking third in its heat, behind Temple A and LaSalle A but in front of Buffalo and Lehigh B.
 
The Rams also entered a B boat in the varsity four which placed fifth in its heat.
 
In the novice 8 competition, the Fordham entry placed fifth in its heat.
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, as they travel California to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic.
