Baseball Knocks Off Stony Brook, 6-1

All Nine Starters Get Hits, While Murphy Records First Win of the Season

A year ago, Stony Brook's Tyler Honahan held the Fordham Rams to just three hits in a 6-1 win at Stony Brook.  This year, the Rams got a little bit of payback, knocking Honahan out of today's game with a six-run fourth inning, en route to a 6-1 victory over the Seawolves at Houlihan Park on Sunday.

With the win, Fordham improved to 5-9 on the year, while Stony Brook fell to 5-8.

Stony Brook took the initial lead of the game in the top of the second inning, when Dylan Resk singled home David Real from second base.

Fordham then answered with a six-run fourth inning to grab a 6-1 lead.  Matthew Kozuch got the rally started, as he jacked a solo home run to left center, his first of the season, to tie the game.  After a strikeout, Justin Bardwell singled up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Ian Edmiston then doubled down the left field line, plating Bardwell.

A single by Luke Stampfl put runners at second and third for Joseph DeVito, who then answered the call with a two-run double to left center for a 4-1 lead.  After a walk and a pitching change, Joseph Runco singled to center off Stony Brook reliever Aaron Pinto to score DeVito.  On the play, centerfielder Toby Handley tried to get Reiss Knehr running to third base, but the throw hit Knehr and bounced away from the third baseman, allowing Knehr to score for the 6-1 edge for the Rams.

From there, Fordham's pitching and defense took over.  In the fifth, Stony Brook got a double from Handley, but was thrown out, trying to stretch the hit into a triple.  Later, with runners at first and second with two outs, pitcher Jimmy Murphy picked off the runner at first to end that threat.

Then in the sixth, with a runner on second and one out, Ben Greenberg came in to relieve Murphy, and got back-to-back strikeouts to stop that scoring chance for the Seawolves.  The next inning saw Greenberg pick off a runner at second base, while the eighth inning had a 4-6-3 double play again holding Stony Brook off the scoreboard.

Anthony DiMeglio came in for the ninth, and retired the side in order to secure the 6-1 win for the Rams.

Murphy (1-1) earned his first win of the season, tossing  5.1 innings with one run on seven hits, while Greenberg threw 2.2 innings of two-hit relief with two strikeouts.  At the plate, all nine starters had one hit a piece with DeVito driving in a pair of runs.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 15th, when the Rams play at Sacred Heart in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
