2016-17 Schedule
It's been more than eight months to the day but competitive women's basketball has finally returned to the Rose Hill Gym. Friday night, the Rams hosted Muhlenberg College for an exhibition contest and walked away winners, 74-50, despite playing down several members of the squad.
Â
"It's always great to put on the uniforms and play someone else," head coach
Stephanie Gaitley said after the game, "We learned some strengths and we learned some weaknesses and will continue to improve!"
Â
The Mules led at the end of the first quarter but Fordham found its footing and finished the match on a 67-32 run over the remaining three periods. Senior
Hannah Missry led the way with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from behind the arc, adding six rebounds, and one assist, steal, and block apiece. Joining her in double figures were freshman
Anna Kelly and
Mary Goulding, two newcomers to the Fordham program. Kelly came off the bench to score 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a three and a four free throw makes in as many attempts, while Goulding provided a bit of everything with 10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
Â
Danielle Burns,
Lauren Holden, and
Kate Kreslina joined Missry and Goulding in the starting lineup. The Rams shot just 20% from the field in the first quarter, including a 1-of-8 mark from deep, but rebounded with a frenetic and efficient second period, shooting 58.8% from the field and 6-of-8 (85.7%) from long to outscore the visitors, 26-8, and lead 33-25 at the half.
Â
On the whole, Fordham shot 36.6% from the field and 44.8% from behind the arc, plus a 9-of-12 mark from the charity stripe. The Rams hauled in 14 offensive rebounds of 46 total and turned in a 23-to-13 assist-to-turnover ratio. Muhlenberg's offense was held to 33.9% from the field and 35.7% from long range, also committing more turnovers (20) than assists (15).
Â
Fordham begins its season with its first-ever appearance in the Preseason WNIT next Friday night, hosting Furman in the Bronx at 7 p.m.
