Breanna Jones' kills started and ended a 7-0 spurt that tied the set at 13-13. The run eventually finished at 11-1, with the Rams taking a 17-14 advantage on a kill from Oshinski coupled with a block error.
After VCU tallied four straight to retake the lead at 18-17, an Ostach kill started another run for Fordham, who scored five of the next six to take the lead for good at 22-19, before ending the set on an 8-3 flurry to claim a 25-21 triumph and a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Rams trailed 3-2 early on, but a Jones' kill triggered seven unanswered for the home team, who gained the lead for good at 9-3, and eventually took their largest lead of the set at 12-4 with the 11-1 run.
VCU fought back to within three points on five different occasions, but each time Fordham held them off. Leading 19-16, Ostach and LaPorta smashed back-to-back kills to start a set-ending 6-2 spurt for the 25-18 victory and a 2-0 lead.
The Rams jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set and would continue to lead by four over the first half, with the last time coming at 13-9. VCU then tallied four straight to tie the match at 13-13.
Fordham slowly inched its advantage back out to three at 18-15, but the set would become deadlocked four time down the stretch, with the last time coming at 21-21 when Jones tied the set with a kill. The Rams ultimately scored five of the final six points to clinch the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
