DAYTON, Ohio -- The Fordham women's volleyball team opened its trip to the Midwest Friday night with a three-set loss to Dayton at the Frericks Center, as the home team won by scores of 25-16, 25-8 and 25-13. With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-12 (1-2 A-10) on the season, while the Flyers improve to 10-5 (3-0 A-10) overall.
Offensively, freshman
Natalie Martinez and senior
Abigail Konovodoff led the way with eight kills and 17 assists, respectively. On the defensive side of the net, freshmen
Breanna Jones had team honors in digs with seven, while Martinez and fellow classmate
Olivia LaPorta both had three total blocks.
Dayton led the opening set wire-to-wire, but Fordham was able to hang within three points for much of the stanza, with the last time coming at 17-14. The Flyers then took control for good with a six straight points and ended the set on an 8-2 flurry to claim the 25-16 victory and a 1-0 lead.
The home team jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the second set, before tallying seven unanswered to take a commanding 13-3 lead, before cruising to the 25-8 victory and a 2-0 lead.
Dayton started the third set with an 8-1 run, but the Rams used back-to back kills from Jones and a kill from sophomore
Sarah Skelton to slice the deficit to 8-4.
Fordham continued to trail by four at 13-9 when Martinez smashed a kill, before the Flyers broke away with five unanswered for an 18-9 advantage and eventually the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
The Rams look to bounce back on Sunday, Oct. 4 when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Saint Louis, with first serve slated for 2 p.m.
