ST. LOUIS -- The Fordham women's volleyball team concluded its road trip to the Midwest Sunday with a three-set loss to Saint Louis inside Chaifetz Pavilion, as the home team won by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-10. With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-13 (1-3 A-10) on the season, while the Billikens improve to 15-5 (4-0 A-10) overall.
Freshman
Breanna Jones and sophomore
Emily Fronk were the offensive leaders for Fordham with 12 kills and 20 assists, respectively. Fronk also shared team-high dig honors with senior
Brennan Delsing, and junior
Kristen Ostach paced the Rams with a team-best five total blocks.
The Rams found themselves down 5-1 to start the opening set, but back-to-back kills from Jones started a string of four straight points, which deadlocked the set at 5-5. However, Saint Louis responded with an 11-3 run to take a 16-8 lead.
Fordham once again scored four in row, as kills from freshman
Natalie Martinez and Jones brought the visitors to within four at 16-12. The Rams eventually outscored the Billikens, 11-2, as the run ended with a pair of Jones' kills and a pair of service aces from Martinez, which advanced Fordham in front by one, 19-18, and forcing a Saint Louis timeout.
The Billikens came out of the timeout and tallied the next five points, before ending the set on a 7-1 spurt to take the opener, 25-20, and a 1-0 lead.
The Rams led the second set 2-1 at the start until Saint Louis took control with five straight points and pushed its lead out to 14-6. But Fordham then made a move, as a Martinez kill started six unanswered for the visitors, who outscored the Billikens, 8-2, with Ostach's cutting the deficit to 16-14.
It was all Saint Louis after that because they would go on to end the set with a 9-1 run for the 25-15 victory and a 2-0 lead.
The Rams dug themselves into a hole in the third set and could never really get out of it. They fought back to climb to within four at 12-8, but it was the closest they came to the Billikens, who finished the set with a 13-2 spurt to clinch the 25-10 and 3-0 victory.
Fordham returns to action Friday, Oct. 9 when it welcomes Duquesne inside the Rose Hill Gym for a 7 p.m. conference matchup.
