Weissert’s Complete Game & Web Gems Highlight 7-2 Win Over St. Bonaventure

Sophomore Hurler Tosses First Career Complete Game With Career-High 12 Strikeouts

Fordham sophomore Greg Weissert pitched a gem of a game on Friday and added two web gems for good measure, as the Rams opened their Atlantic 10 series against St. Bonaventure with a 7-2 win at Houlihan Park.

With the win, Fordham improved to 19-25 on the season, 10-6 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure fell to 14-21-2 on the year, 2-14 in the league.

Fordham got on the board right away in the first, as the Rams successfully pulled off the delayed first and third steal, which allowed Ian Edmiston to score from third before Matthew Kozuch was tagged out for the final out of the inning.

The Rams added to their lead with a three-run third inning to go ahead 4-0.  Jason Lundy started the rally with a one-out single, which was followed by an infield single by Joseph Runco.  After a pop out, Kozuch tripled to the center field wall, scoring both runners.  Charles Galiano then lined a single over the shortstop to score Kozuch.

Fordham starting pitcher Greg Weissert cruised into the fifth without allowing a runner reach base, and it stayed that way courtesy of a diving catch by Ryan McNally in left center field.

Fordham tacked on two more runs in the fifth, using the long ball, as Edmiston hit a two-run home run to left, his first of the season, scoring Runco, who was hit by a pitch.

The defense continued to be stellar in the sixth, but this time it was Weissert helping his own cause, as Tyler Kirwan lined a pitch back to Weissert that he caught with his bare hand, keeping his bid for a perfect game alive.

However, the perfect game would get broken up in the top of the seventh, when Cole Peterson led off the frame with a single to center.  The Bonnies also got back into the game, loading the bases with no outs and picking up two runs on a sacrifice fly and an error to pull within a 6-2 score.

Fordham though picked up an insurance run in the eighth, as McNally tripled home Mark Donadio, who reached on a single and stole second, for a 7-2 lead.

Weissert held down the Bonnies in the ninth, making another bare hand play on a comebacker to the mound and finishing the game with a strikeout.  The strikeout was his career-high 12th of the game, which finished his first career complete game win.  He allowed just two hits, one walk, and one earned run in the game.

At the plate, Edmiston was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI, while Galiano was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Runco had a hit and two runs scored with Kozuch going 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

The same two teams match up on Saturday, May 2nd, for game two of this series, beginning at 2:00 PM.
