Baseball Falls To Rutgers, 10-4

Galiano, Runco, and Mahoney Each Connect on Two Hits for Fordham

Rutgers' Christian Campbell threw three hitless innings of relief, while Chris Suseck drive in three runs, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 10-4 win over the Fordham Rams at Houlihan Park on Wednesday.

The loss moved Fordham to 10-19 overall, while Rutgers improved to 11-20.

Fordham picked up the opening run of the game in the first, as Joseph Runco singled through the right side and stole second.  After a ground out, Matthew Kozuch drew a walk and stole second.  Mark Donadio then plated Runco with a sacrifice fly to center.

Rutgers responded with four runs in the second to lead by a 4-1 count.  Fordham scored once in the third to make it 4-2, as Kozuch doubled off the right field wall and scored on a single by Ryan Mahoney.

The teams exchanged runs in the fourth to make it a 5-3 game, before Rutgers scored once in the seventh and four times in the eighth to lead 10-3.  The big hit came from Chris Suseck, who connected on a three-run double in the eighth.

Fordham would score once in the ninth for the 10-4 final score.  Ryan Carroll opened the ninth with a single and moved to second on a walk to Jordan Gajdos.  Tim O'Connor then reached on an infield single to load the bases.  Tyler Urbach then hit into a double play, which allowed Carroll to score from third.

Rutgers' Christian Campbell earned the win pitching three hitless innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Fordham used nine pitchers in the game with only David Manasek (2 IP, 2 K) and Cody Johnson (1.1 IP, 1 K) throwing more than an inning.  David Wright (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on two walks, a hit, and a hit by pitch.

At the plate, Charles Galiano was 2-for-3 with a home run, while Runco was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.  His two stolen bases gave Runco 60 for his career, moving past Ray Montgomery (59 – 1988-90) and tying Eric Reese (2005-08) for tenth on Fordham's all-time list.  Mahoney was also 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game.

The Fordham baseball team will be back in action on Friday, April 10th, when the Rams open a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Davidson, beginning at 6:00 PM.
