Softball Blanks UMass, Sweeps Three-Game Set

Rams Score All Six Runs in the Second Inning

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Fordham softball team scored all the runs it would need in a six-run second inning and blanked Massachusetts, 6-0, Sunday in the Atlantic 10 series finale at Sortino Field. With the victory, the Rams sweep the three-game series, extend their win streak to four, and improve to 21-16 (7-4 A10) on the season, while the Minutewomen fall to 8-19 (3-9 A10) overall.

Redshirt junior Rachel Gillen (4 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K), junior Patti Maloney (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and senior Michelle Daubman (1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 SO) combined on the seven-hit shutout.

Sophomore Sydney Canessa provided all the scoring Fordham would need with a grand slam, as her second home run of the season scored Daubman and seniors Cora Ianiro and Brianna Turgeon. Later in the frame, Gillen helped herself out with a two-run single that scored sophomore Lindsay Mayer and senior Kayla Lombardo.

Six different Rams scored a run, with Canessa driving home four and Gillen two. The duo also had two hits along with Mayer, as the team finished with eight.

Caroline Raymond (6-11) was tagged with her second loss in as many days after allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking seven and striking out two in the complete-game effort.

Fordham returns to action Wednesday, April 15 when it travels to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. to take on St. Bonaventure in a conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
