HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Fordham softball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Northwestern Tuesday night at Hofstra Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Rams fall to 12-13 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 15-11 overall. Northwestern led 7-0 after two innings, with six runs coming in the bottom of the first.
After Fordham stranded a pair of runners on the bases in its half of the first, the Wildcats greeted Ram starter
Rachel Gillen with three straight singles. The redshirt junior was able to get a foul out to first base, before the next batter, Julia Kuhn, dropped a RBI single into shallow right field for the first run. Brianna LeBeau followed and lined a grand slam over the center field fence, as the trajectory may have traveled above 10 feet. Anna Edwards then made it back-to-back home runs with a blast to dead center field, which made the score 6-0.
Northwestern used the long ball again in the bottom of the second when starting pitcher Amy Letourneau homered over the right-center field fence.
Fordham was able to limit the Wildcat offense over the final four innings. Senior
Michele Daubman led off the top of the fourth with a towering home run over the left field fence, her fourth of the season. Later in the inning, fellow classmate
Paige Ortiz cut the deficit to 7-2, as her second four-bagger of the season carried over the left field fence.
The Rams worked a pair of walks with one out in their final at-bat but could not sustain a rally to come back. Sophomore
Sydney Canessa collected two of Fordham's six hits.
Gillen (8-6) allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits over 3.0 innings while walking none and striking out three in the loss. Daubman and junior
Patti Maloney combined to toss 3.0 innings of shutout relief, with Maloney fanning two in the sixth inning.
Letourneau (8-8) went the distance and allowed two earned runs on six hits to go along with three walks and 11 strikeouts. Sabrina Rabin led the Northwestern 14-hit attack with three hits, while Andrea DePrima, Andrea Filler and Edwards all added two.
The Rams return to action Wednesday for their home opener at Bahoshy Field against Iona, with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
