Softball Splits Two Games Saturday at Kajikawa Classic

Rams Rally to Beat Pacific Before Falling to California

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Fordham softball team collected its first victory of the season Saturday, 4-3, over Pacific, before falling to California, 6-0, at Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic. With the split, the Rams move to 1-3 on the season.

Game One
Senior Kayla Lombardo's two-run single with one out in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference, as senior Cora Ianiro and sophomore Amy Van Hoven scored to give the Rams a 4-3 lead.

Senior Rachel Gillen took care of the rest in the circle for Fordham and recorded a pair of strikeouts to end Pacific scoring threats in the final two innings, including one to end the game with the tying run on third base.

Gillen (1-1) collected the victory after pitching 6.1 innings of three-hit relief while walking two and striking out eight. She was summoned into the game after the Tigers scored three times in the top of the first off senior starter Michele Daubman.

The Rams were able to get a run back in the bottom of the first when Van Hoven came around on sophomore Lindsay Mayer's two-out RBI single through the left side. She then delivered with two outs in the bottom of the third with a RBI single that plated Ianiro to slice the deficit to 3-2.

Fordham tallied eight hits, with Van Hoven, Mayer and Ianiro all collecting two apiece. Lombard and Mayer each had two RBI, while Van Hoven and Ianiro both scored twice. Van Hoven also added a stolen base.

Pacific's Danni Bonnet (1-2) took the loss in the circle for the Tigers after going the distance. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits while walking one and fanning six. Sara Anderson (3-for-4) and Sydney Lahners (2-for-2) paced the Pacific seven-hit effort, with Lahners driving home a pair of runs.

Game Two
The Rams managed only four hits against the Golden Bears, who came into the game receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll. After Fordham stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the first, Cal took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the frame on Cheyenne Cordes' RBI single.

The Rams stranded a pair of runners in the top of the second, and the Golden Bears increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom half on Alleah Laxamana's solo shot over the left-center field fence.

Both sides failed to score in the third, and Daubman doubled with two outs in top of the fourth but was unable to come around. Cal then scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the inning after an error on the left fielder.

The Golden Bears would score two more times in the fifth and once more in the sixth to clinch the victory. Fordham had runners on second and third in the top of the sixth but a double play ended the threat.

Sophomore Lauren Quense (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Rams. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, did not walk a batter and whiffed one in 4.0 innings of work. Junior Patti Maloney tossed the final two innings for Fordham.

Stephanie Trzcinski (1-0) came away with the complete-game shutout victory, walking three and striking out two. Jazmyn Jackson, Britt Vonk and Cordes all had two hits for the Golden Bears, who finished with 10, while Kobe Pettis had two RBI.
