In a re-match of last year's Atlantic 10 Championship game, nothing came easy as Fordham and Rhode Island met at the URI Soccer Complex on Wednesday night. However, the result was the same as a year ago with Fordham pulling out a 1-0 victory in Kingston, Rhode Island.
With the win, Fordham improved to 6-5-3 on the year, 4-1-0 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island fell to 7-6-2 overall, 2-2-1 in the conference.
The lone goal of the contest came in the 18
th minute, when
Jannik Loebe found
Andres Penfold for a shot, beating URI goalkeeper Nils Leifhelm to the bottom left corner. It was Penfold's second goal of the season.
Fordham almost went ahead 2-0 in the 80
th minute, when
Gabe Stauber let a shot loose but the ball was cleared off the line by a defender.
Fordham then had to hold steady on defense, as goalkeeper
Rashid Nuhu made two saves over the final five minutes, including one in the final minute to secure the shutout win. Nuhu finished the game with three saves, as did his counterpart Leifhelm.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 25
