Women's Rowing Opens at Head of the Housatonic

Novice 8 Wins Silver; Varsity 8 Finishes Ahead of Defending A-10 Champion UMass & URI

Shelton, Conn. - Women's Rowing raced in three different event categories on Saturday October 10th, at the Head of the Housatonic and walked away with silver medals in the Collegiate Women's Novice 8+. This was the first official race of the 2015-16 season after last week's race at West Point was canceled due to inclement weather conditions.
 
Placing second in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+, the Rams lineup consisted of coxswain Madison Flotteron, Noelle Chaney, Danielle Kosman, Kennedy Abbott, Bridget Callaghan, Carly Roncinske, Elizabeth Klotzbach, Jessica Mingrino and Sarah White. The Rams finished second behind Williams Boat Club by 35 seconds in a time of 17:27.2. 

13713The Rams raced two lineups in the Collegiate Women Division 1 8+ and placed eighth and 17th respectively. The "A" lineup of coxswain Jacquelyn Ramos, Maura O'Donnell, Erin Parker, Fiona Murtagh, Ashley Hawkesworth, Cynthia Luz, Caroline Hamann and Kerry Egan finished 8th with a time of 15:32.7 behind crews from Yale, Brown and Northeastern University. The Rams were the first program from the A-10 Conference to finish, with UMass finishing ninth, eight seconds behind the Rams.
 
Also racing in the Collegiate Women Division I 8+ was coxswain Rebecca Aviles, Kara Ramsey, Kristen Shuman, Jessica Kammen, Katie Dillon, Kelly Leonard, Leslie Fung, Bridget Kayes and Catherine Napoli. This "B" lineup placed 17th out of 24 in a time of 16:37.4. 
 
In the Collegiate Women's 4+, the Rams had two entries. The "A" lineup of coxswain Nicollette Curran, Emily Mohri, Ariene Merkle, Hana Kurihara and Holly O'Reilly placed ninth in a time of 19:05.4. The "B" lineup of coxswain Kira Forrester, Dena Bussa, Sam Cerqueira, Anastasia Minhovits and Bailey Barnett placed 12th in a time of 20:18.3. There were 13 entries in the event.
 
"Our entire squad has been working hard and we are all encouraged to be very competitive with last year's top two teams in the A-10 Conference" said Head Coach Ted Bonanno.  "Placing ahead of both UMass and URI in the first varsity eight and winning silver medals in the Novice eight are meaningful accomplishments in our first race of the fall season."
 
Next up for the Rams is the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 17th and 18th.
