Bronx, N.Y. (March 1, 2014) – Basketball, like life, is all about timing. And the timing couldn't have been worse for the Fordham University men's basketball squad tonight as Tyreek Duran hit a layup at the buzzer to break a 62-62 tie and thrust La Salle University to a 64-62 win over the Rams in an Atlantic 10 game in the Rose Hill Gym.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 9-18 overall, 2-12 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle evens its record at 14-14, 6-8 in the conference.
A
Bryan Smith jumper tied the game for Fordham with 35.2 seconds left. La Salle, out of timeouts, held the ball out by midcourt until the clock was under ten seconds when Tyrone Garland drove the lane only to have his shot blocked by
Branden Frazier and the ball went out of bounds as the buzzer sounded. But the officials decided to put 0.07 seconds on the clock and D.J. Peterson inbounded the ball to a cutting Duren who got the shot off as time expired.
The Rams were down ten, 47-37, with 14:08 left when a Smith layup ignited a 9-0 Fordham spurt as the Rams pulled within one, 47-46, on a Smith layup with 11:15 on the clock.
The Rams couldn't take the lead but got the La Salle lead down to two twice over the next four minutes before the Explorers took a 58-52 lead on Peterson trifecta with 5:46 left.
Severe answered with a three-pointer for the Rams 1:30 later to make it a three-point game and, a minute later, Severe hit two free throws to make it a one-point game, 58-57.
Jerrell Wright was fouled with 2:51 remaining but made just one of two free throws to give La Salle a 59-57 lead and Severe had a chance to tie the game but could only connect on one of his two free throws ten seconds later. But a Duran three-point play with 2:27 remaining got the La Salle advantage to four, 62-58, before Smith hit two free throws with 1:14 on the clock and then tied the game with his jumper.
A slow start doomed the Rams as Fordham trailed 11-2 5:47 into the game. Fordham missed on its first five field goal attempts before a
Chris Whitehead layup got the home team on the board with 14:38 left in the half.
La Salle would get the lead up to as many as 15, 21-6, on a Steve Zack jumper with 9:23 left but Fordham would go on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to seven, 23-16, following a Frazier jumper just over two minutes later.
A Peterson three boosted the Explorers' lead to ten, 26-16, but Fordham fought back, scoring eight of the next ten points to make it a four-point game, 28-24, on a
Jon Severe jumper with 1:12 remaining, and the Rams would trail by three at the break thanks to a Frazier buzzer-beating three.
Frazier finished with a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-16 from the field, and he added six assists, while Severe added ten points and Smith eight.
Ryan Canty grabbed eleven rebounds, his second straight double-digit rebounding game, and he matched his career-high with four blocks.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, March 5, as they travel to Kingston, R.I., to face the University of Rhode Island Rams in an Atlantic 10 matchup in the Ryan Center at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast live on SportsNet NY (SNY).
