Abigail Corning paced the Rams with 20 points and seven rebounds, helping Fordham outlast George Washington on Saturday afternoon in the Rose Hill Gym.
Â
With the win, the Rams move to 19-5 (8-3 in the A-10) and bump their home record to 12-1 on the year.Â
Â
Corning was one of four Rams to finish the game in double figures.Â
Hannah Missry posted 12 points, while
Erin Rooney and
Emily Tapio each added 11. Rooney also dished out a game-high seven assists.
Â
The Rams played incredibly unselfish basketball in the win, assisting on 21 of their 22 field goals for the game. They also connected on 45.8 percent of their field goals, 40 percent of their three pointers and 83 percent of their tries from the charity stripe.
Â
Fordham got on the board first in the early going, as Missry connected on a three and Tapio banked in a layup to put the Rams ahead 5-0 a few minutes into the action. The Colonials quickly closed the gap, uncorking a 14-2 run to move ahead 14-7 at the 13:44 mark of the half.
Â
Down seven, the Rams responded with five unanswered to pull within two, but GW (16-8, 7-4 A-10) answered every Fordham bucket with one of their own, holding on to a 20-19 lead at the under eight minute media timeout.
Â
Missry finally knotted the game at 26 on a deep three with 2:42 to go and the Rams grabbed their first lead in nearly 15 minutes when Corning connected from downtown a minute later. A few possessions later, Clark nailed a 15 footer from the baseline to cap the Fordham run at 8-0, giving the Rams a 31-26 lead. The Rams maintained that lead at the intermission.
Â
Corning led Fordham with 13 points and five rebounds in the first half, while Missry and
Mary Nwachukwu each added six.
Â
The Rams started the second stanza with a bang, as Corning and Missry connected from downtown on an 8-2 run, giving the Rams an 11 point lead, 39-28, just 1:16 into the half.
Â
GW threatened a few minutes later, as Danni Jackson cut the Fordham lead to five with a three-pointer, but the Rams moved the lead back to nine when Rooney found Tapio inside for an easy bucket with 12:52 to go.
Â
The Rams would build their lead as high as 13 before the Colonials made another push, narrowing the deficit to eight on a pair of Jackson free throws with 6:40 left in the half. But Clark put to bed any hopes of a comeback at that time, draining a three from the corner to put the Rams back up by 11.Â
Â
With a minute to go, the Colonials made one last attempt when Jonquel Jones converted on a three-pointer to cut the lead to five, 61-56. But the Rams continued their stellar free throw shooting over the closing minute, outlasting GW and earning the victory.
Â
The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Richmond for a nationally televised match up with the Spiders. That game will be aired on the CBS Sports Network.
