Photo GalleryBehind 13 kills from both Catie Steffen and Franki Darnold, the Rhode Island Rams swept a three-set match from the Fordham Rams at the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday. Final set scores were 25-8, 25-23, and 25-21.
The loss puts Fordham at 1-18 on the year, 1-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island moved to 13-5 overall, 4-1 in the league.
It was all Rhode Island in the opening set, as URI hit .667 as a team with 13 kills, compared to Fordham's -.091.
Fordham fought hard in the second set, jumping out to a 12-5 lead behind four blocks by
Sarah Skelton. Rhode Island battled its way back to eventually take a 23-21 lead. After a service error, Fordham got a block from
Nicole Freeley and
Gabriela Cinkova to knot the score at 23 all, forcing a Rhode Island timeout. However, Rhode Island was able to close out the set with a kill from Layne Self and a Fordham attack error.
Rhode Island then closed out the match with a four-point set win in the third. In that set, Franki Darnold led the way with six kills, while Marie Gillcrist had four blocks.
For Fordham,
Brianna O'Neil knocked down a team-high 11 kills to go with seven digs, while Skelton had three kills and a season-high eight blocks.
Emily Fronk had 15 assists and six digs with
Grace Muller having 10 digs and three assists.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, October 17
th, when the Rams play at Dayton, beginning at 7:00 PM.
