Corning Scores Her 1,000th in 75-61 Victory

Rams Extend School-Record Winning Streak to 12

Box Score

The Rams extended their school-record winning streak to 12 games and senior Abigail Corning became just the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 points, as Fordham downed UMass 75-61 in the Mullins Center on Sunday afternoon.

Corning, who entered the game needing 20 points to reach the milestone, scored 20 exactly on 10-16 shooting, pulling down seven boards and dishing out four assists in the process.

Erin Rooney had another outstanding effort for the Rams, tallying 24 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists to lead the Rams in the win.  The Christchurch, New Zealand, native also swiped two steals.

Hannah Missry also finished the game in double figures, converting on three shots from downtown and ending the game with 11 points.

Emily Tapio scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds in the victory, despite playing only 17 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Rams had a stellar day distributing the ball, dishing out 19 assists while surrendering only 11 turnovers.  Fordham also pounded UMass on the glass, outrebounding the Minutewomen by a 34-27 margin.

Fordham had an uncharacteristically slow start to the contest, allowing the Minutewomen to take an 8-4 lead three and a half minutes into the game.  The Rams, however, quickly responded.  A Tapio layup kicked off a 7-0 run, giving Fordham an 11-8 lead with 15:07 to play in the first half.

Fordham would build its lead as high as five, 15-10, by the next media timeout, but Kim Pierre-Louis kept it close for the Minutewomen with her sixth point of the game, making it 15-14 Rams near the midway point of the half.

Up one, the Rams uncorked another run, scoring eight unanswered over the next three minutes to move ahead by nine, 23-14, with just under eight minutes to go.

After UMass stopped the run, a pair of three-pointers from Rooney and Missry helped extend the Fordham lead to double digits, taking a 30-18 advantage on the Missry triple with just over four minutes left in the opening half.

The Minutewomen were able to close the lead to ten, 35-25, before the intermission, making seven straight free throws to close the half.

Rooney led all scorers with 14 in the first half, while Corning chipped in eight and Missry added six.

The Fordham offense wasted no time getting out of the gate in the second half, hitting five of their first six shots and jumping ahead by 15, 46-31, with 16 minutes to go.

The Rams maintained a lead in that area over the next several minutes, as Corning and Rooney continued to lead the Rams with their hot hands, helping the Rams shoot 12-17 from the floor over the opening ten minutes of play.

The two teams continued to trade points, but Corning stole the show at the five minute mark.  The senior drained a midrange jumper, putting the Rams ahead 67-50 and giving her 1,000 for her career.

UMass continued to fight down the stretch, but the Rams closed out the victory, 75-61.

The Rams will return to the Rose Hill Gym on Wednesday night, playing host to Duquesne at 7 PM.
